NeoCon is the most important event of the year for commercial interior design, with 400+ exhibitors and over 50K attendees from all around the globe. Our client wanted to submit three flooring products, and they needed messaging that would fit the specific guidelines for three different awards: MetropolisLikes, HiP, and Best of NeoCon.

Goal

These submissions hinged on our ability to convey the extremely technical information about the manufacturing and installation of these products, as well as create a compelling narrative that would set them apart from the competition.

Execution

All previous award submissions were done by previous agency partners, and the client had none of the previously created assets. The first step in creating this copy was intense research – both into the world of commercial flooring and the client’s manufacturing process.

I decided to take a more creative approach to these submissions, focusing on the unique stories of how the designs were inspired. My goal was to transport the judges to a physical space instead of writing about the technical aesthetic of the products.

Results

The carpet flooring product “Liminal Space” won a Silver Best of NeoCon award in Flooring – Carpet: Broadloom in 2024 as well as a 2024 MetropolisLikes Award in the Flooring. Below is a sample of the Liminal Space award submission:

Mannington Commercial is excited to formally showcase Liminal Space, our new collection of carpet available in both modular tile and broadloom.

Liminal space is a shift in time, a moment each of us occupies when we come to the threshold between what is and what will be. It’s a powerful place, a brief interlude before the next phase of life comes to pass. This transitional period, and the wonder we occupy within it, is the driving force behind our Liminal Space collection.

Our designer took inspiration from a journey to the Columbus Printed Art Center and Schiller Park. Dappled afternoon light falling beneath the canopies of the Champion Ash and Elm trees, temporal delights that often go unnoticed, served as the first spark of inspiration for these new designs. Using the art of printmaking at the CPAC studio, our designer studied how to capture these fleeting moments of beauty and translate them into something more tangible and lasting.

Liminal Space comes in both modular and broadloom with a variety of backing options. This collection is made with type 6’6 nylon fiber, and although it has been made with workplace, senior living, and hospitality in mind, it has the fluidity necessary to suit a variety of industry spaces.
